Snow Ski Equipment - How to Choose Your Skiing Goggles
Ski goggles are an important piece of equipment for ensuring safety on the slopes. They protect your eyes from sun damage and your face from burn. This accounts for their large, somewhat goofy-looking size. Their size also helps you have a wide field of peripheral vision on the slopes.
The frames of your ski goggle are usually composed of soft flexible materials. Due to their ability to maintain their shape, nylon and rubber are often used in ski goggle design. These materials do not become brittle in cold temperatures. Additionally, they will not damage your face in the event of a fall. You will also notice that ski goggles have a thick, adjustable strap that is designed to hold them in place.
There are number of factors that should be taken into consideration when purchasing ski goggles. To avoid the “foggy goggle syndrome,” make sure that the ski goggles have decent ventilation. As such, you should look for goggles with foam covered air portals. If you wear glasses, be sure to choose ski goggles that are designed to fit over them. Another option is to choose prescription ski goggles.
Ski Goggle Lens Colors
• Clear lenses work best for extremely stormy conditions or for night skiing.
• Yellow lenses are also suitable for stormy conditions, as well as overcast days. These lenses increase dark/light contrast and brighten up the entire mountain landscape.
• Vermillion or pink lenses can also increase dark/light contrast in most snow conditions.
• Orange ski goggle lenses also increase contrast. They are perfect for bright, sunny days. However, be sure to choose an option with a mirror for a darker lens. This prevents sun glare in the brightest conditions.
• Modulator lenses or photo chromic lenses change color depending upon the light conditions. They provide a light high contrast color for dark stormy weather and a darker color for extremely sunny days. Although these ski goggles tend to be a bit more expensive, they are the most versatile type pf goggle.
As mentioned in the helmet section, make sure to choose a pair of goggles that will fit with your ski helmet.
