New England Family Ski Trips: Smugglers Notch

It’s easy to see why Ski Magazine continually lists Smuggler’s Notch as the best ski resort for families. The resort has an excellent variety of activities for the entire family, such as the Little Rascals on Snow program, which gets kids as young as 2-and-a-half used to ski equipment and sliding. The All-day Discovery Dynamos programs start at age 3. Make sure that your kids are no longer in diapers if you enroll them in this program. Your younger children will enjoy visits from the resort mascots, Billy Bob Bear and Mogul Mouse. On Morse Mountain, your kids can improve their skills at Sir Henry's Learning and Fun Park. If your kids are enrolled in scouts, they may earn mountain sports merit badges in accredited programs.

When the slopes close, get your family together and take an evening trek through the woods on snowshoes. Later, share some hot apple cider, grab a microphone and make fools of yourself at karaoke, or try your hand at painting pottery.

Romance in the Snow

A ski trip can be a great place to meet your future significant other. However, just like there are some resorts that are better suited for families, some are better suited for singles. In fact, in some cases, the resorts that are labeled “best for families” might not be the best places for singles. So where should you go? Read on.

Planning a ski trip for singles requires research. Some areas have great skiing, but not much of a party life.  What are you looking for? Do you want to meet someone who lives within a two hour drive of you?  Consider a resort that attracts people from your area.  If you want to widen your scope to include singles from all over North America, or even the world, consider the larger destination resorts. The following checklist should help you make a decision:

• Avoid resorts described as: Voted Best for Families.

• Unless you’ll only consider a partner whose skills match yours, choose areas with varied terrain. Although women are catching up in the snow sport arena, the pickings are slim at the more extreme resorts.

• Areas that have a self contained village offer better opportunities for meeting people.

• Consider the economic factors. If you live a relatively humble existence, anyone you meet at a jet setter’s resort may be looking for someone with a higher economic status.

• When you go determines who you’ll meet. Spring Break attracts college age singles. During Christmas, the resorts are filled with families and couples. If want to meet a local so you have an excuse to move to a ski town, plan your trip for either early or late season when the resort is not overrun with tourists.
